Pavement Sweeping Starts This Week
The District’s Pavement Sweeping contractor, Maritime Farms and Land Management, LLC, will begin pavement sweeping of roadways and parking lots this week. We understand that landowners would like sweeping to occur as soon as possible after snow melt, however, the contractor sweeps a total of 300 acres so please be patient. Spring sweeping utilizes a combination of mechanical broom sweepers and a specialized “regenerative air” sweeper that collects fine particulate. A new regenerative air sweeper costs in the neighborhood of $250,000 to $300,000. There are very few of these machines owned privately in the greater Portland area. It is, therefore, not feasible to put out a “fleet” of these machines for spring cleanup.
As a reminder to help us prepare for the spring sweeping, please ask your winter maintenance personnel to check that your snow dumps are reasonably free of large debris, examples include concrete curbing, broken asphalt, and general refuse. Cleaning up large debris can take an excessive amount of time for our contractor, resulting in delays and potentially impacting other Participating Landowners receiving their spring sweep in a timely manner.
The contractor will work overnight or early in the day to minimize interference with your tenants, customers, patients, and visitors.
The spring cleanup program helps to remove sand, salt, grit, trash, and other debris from paved areas to keep these pollutants from washing into Long Creek. This is an important part of the pollution prevention activities that the District manages to maintain and improve the water quality of the creek!
